The Breaking and Entering Podcast, hosted by Geno Schellenberger, brought on two Strategic Brand Communication alumni to talk about their careers and time in the SBC program, having similar reasons for pursuing.
Shannon Lancor is a freelance designer who works together with small companies after having worked her way up to brand manager at her previous company. Emilie Vicchio serves as the director of Marketing for a B2B company that provides professional services to military branches.
Like a Digital Marketing Degree but with a Brand Strategy Twist
One of Shannon’s main reasons for going into the SBC program was to fill in the gaps of knowledge she missed in brand strategy and marketing. This was in part because of the art-heavy college career she had experienced while majoring in graphic design. She knew she needed something different from a digital marketing degree.
Emilie realized that even after receiving an MBA she still didn’t understand the why behind marketing and strategy. So, she was lucky enough to have a supportive job that would aid her in her journey at the SBC program when she would need it.
SBC or MBA?
Geno Schellenberger also gives listeners a gem of advice on behalf of the SBC program, saying that instead of going into a broad MBA program, why not pick a program that’s more inexpensive, tailored to your needs, and faster than others. Not only that, but the program’s vast network of amazing alumni and professors.
Emilie also had her two cents on the matter, explaining that comparatively the MBA served as a degree that was more “broad and theoretical,” whereas SBC was more “concerned with advancing your focus area”.

Sage Advice for Pursuing Marketing
Both Emilie and Shannon give great advice on pursuing a career in marketing.
Shannon’s advice is remembering that it is okay to make mistakes. It’s critical to understand that in life, mistakes are inevitable, but you have to take them in stride and you will be okay.
Emilie’s advice is keeping up on your accomplishments and successes you’ve had because determining how you fit into the mix of what’s out there is going to give you a better understanding of what to pursue.
